How to Plan a Music Video Shoot in Pretoria: What to Expect on Set

If you’re planning your first music video or brand shoot in Pretoria, the biggest mistakes usually happen before the camera ever rolls — not on the day itself. Here’s what we walk every client through before we confirm a shoot date.

1. Lock the concept before the location

It’s tempting to fall in love with a location first, but the concept should drive the location choice — not the other way round. A rooftop might look incredible on Instagram, but if your treatment calls for intimate, close-up storytelling, an open rooftop with wind noise and harsh midday light can work against you. We always storyboard first, then scout.

2. Think about permissions early

Public spaces, malls, corporate buildings, and many popular Pretoria landmarks require permission from the property owner or local authority before you can film there — even for a small crew. Rules and fees vary a lot by location and change over time, so we confirm current requirements directly with each venue or authority as part of pre-production, rather than assuming what worked on a past shoot still applies. Build this into your timeline: last-minute location changes because of missing permissions are one of the most common causes of delayed shoots.

3. Plan around Pretoria’s light and weather

Golden hour in Gauteng shifts noticeably between summer and winter, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer months. If your concept depends on natural light for a specific mood, we build in a weather contingency day or shift the schedule toward early morning shooting.

4. Budget for the full day, not just the shoot

A typical single-location shoot day includes setup and load-in, lighting and camera tests, the shoot itself, and breakdown — easily 8–10 hours total. Multi-location shoots need travel time factored in between each stop, which often gets underestimated in early planning.

5. Have a shot list, but stay flexible

A detailed shot list keeps the day on schedule, but the best moments on set often happen off-script — a spontaneous performance take, unexpected light through a window, a background detail that adds texture. We shoot the planned list first to protect the essentials, then leave room to chase anything special that happens naturally.

What to expect on shoot day with Hype Media

Our crew arrives with lighting, camera, and audio gear already tested, briefs the full team on the shot list, and keeps a running schedule throughout the day so you always know what’s coming next. We check in with you after key scenes so nothing gets locked in post-production that didn’t match your vision on the day.
